The Soul Society was a standout Dallas show band in the late 1960s, recognized for their energetic performances, sharp style, and forward-thinking approach to live music. The group featured future Showco founders and key alumni—including Jack Calmes, Rusty Brutsche, David Alley, and a cameo from Angus Wynne, who was also part of the original Showco producing team. Their commitment to quality sound and showmanship helped lay the foundation for Showco’s pioneering legacy in concert production. The Soul Society’s story is an essential chapter in the evolution of both the Dallas music scene and the technology that would shape the future of live events.
In 1967, building on their momentum from the local music scene, Jack Calmes and Angus Wynne—alongside club partner Stan Levinson—opened Soul City, a vibrant nightclub on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. With a 300-person capacity and a forward-thinking booking approach, Soul City quickly became a hotspot for legendary performances, attracting artists like James Brown, Tina Turner, and Chuck Berry. The club’s electric atmosphere was heightened by Calmes frequently joining these music icons on stage, creating unforgettable experiences for both audiences and performers. Though their ownership was brief, Soul City left a lasting mark on Dallas nightlife and provided invaluable inspiration and connections that would shape the future of concert sound through Showco.
